The Mandela Catalogue is an analog horror YouTube series by Alex Kister, who was seventeen at the time, with its first short released on June 9, 2021. Set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin, it features doppelgänger-like beings called "Alternates" that psychologically torment people into suicide and then take over their identities. It is rendered in the textures of VHS and early digital video.
The heart of the horror is the usurpation of identity. The premise that a being identical to you imitates you while seeking to break you down shakes, at its root, your trust in yourself and in those close to you. Immediately after its 2021 debut it was praised as the scariest analog horror series on YouTube.
The form carries the content. Most entries take the shape of a public service broadcast, an emergency alert, an instructional tape, a home recording. No narrator explains anything, and the viewer is placed after the fact, going through material that outlived the events. Having to decide for yourself what you are looking at is the device; the absence of explanation is the craft.
The series lays the conventions of analog horror over a biblical frame, pushing the origin of the Alternates back to the beginning of humankind and delivering that in the register of an emergency bulletin. The signature of the work is this contrast — unbearable content in the flat voice of an official notice.
Controversy around the creator in 2023 led to the series being halted and restarted, and earlier entries have since been re-edited more than once. What survives is therefore less a finished version than a pile of versions, leaving the viewer to decide which text is the real one.
