Local 58 is a horror web series by Kris Straub, the author of Candle Cove, whose first episode "Weather Service" was released on October 26, 2015. Over decades, the signal of the fictional public-access station WCLV-TV (Local 58) in Mason County, West Virginia, is repeatedly hijacked by increasingly ominous and surreal broadcasts. Footage degraded to VHS quality is its hallmark.
The heart of the horror is the betrayal of a trusted medium. A screen believed to carry ordinary public announcements turns, at some moment, into commands and threats, and the most familiar channel of information becomes the source of dread. The work is credited with establishing the conventions of analog horror that successors like Gemini Home Entertainment and the Mandela Catalogue would follow.
