Candle Cove

Also: Candle Cove

Candle Cove is a 2009 short story by Kris Straub, framed as adults on an internet forum reminiscing about a bizarre puppet-show children’s program, "Candle Cove," that they watched as kids. As ever more horrible details are shared, one person finally reveals the truth: nothing ever actually aired on that channel — he had only been watching static.

The heart of the horror is the possibility of falsified collective memory. The fact that something many people remember equally vividly can still be no proof of reality shakes the trust in memory and testimony at its root. Along with the lost-episode genre, it is a landmark of the theme that memory cannot guarantee the truth.
