The Five Fields

January 24. I went through all five fields handed over.

At twenty past nine I looked at the first field.

Matters completed.

There is no procedure for what is entered.

The one before entered the articles and the impressions and the registrations and the pending item.

At twenty to ten I counted what I have done since taking the post.

Four.

Deciding to continue the log, counting the people, signing, and entering in the third field.

Three of them were done because counts did not agree.

At ten to ten I set the two entries against each other.

The field is called matters completed.

The four the one before entered are figures.

The four I entered are things done.

Figures go into the same field and things done go into it too.

Which is correct is not in the procedure.

At ten I looked at the second field.

Matters to follow.

The one before copied out the one line from page sixty-four of the notebook.

Counted this far. The next is eight.

At twenty past ten I looked for what I am to enter.

The stocktaking is in February.

That is the matter to follow.

The one before has a count in the second field and I have a date in mine.

Different kinds go into the same field.

At twenty to eleven I looked at the third field.

It is already filled.

I filled it on the seventh day after taking the post.

It is the first of the fields handed over that I entered in.

At eleven I looked at the annexed sheet.

The one before could not fit twenty margin entries on one sheet and annexed a sheet.

There being no procedure for annexing, they wrote that in the margin, it says.

Continuing with mine makes thirty-six.

The annexed sheet will not hold them either.

I annexed a sheet to the annexed sheet.

There is still no procedure for annexing.

I wrote it in the margin. It is thirty-seven.

At one I looked at the fourth field.

Entries whose time is not remembered.

The one before entered three. Two in May and one in October.

I have none.

At twenty past one I looked for the way to enter a thing that is not there.

Whether to enter nought or to leave it blank is not in the procedure.

If I leave it blank the three remain and mine is absent.

If I continue, nought comes after three.

I entered nought.

Nought has gone onto this room's paper for the first time.

At twenty to two I looked for a box to enter that in.

There is none.

I wrote it in the margin. It is thirty-eight.

Nought means there is none and leaving it blank means there is none.

The two mean the same and one is an entry and the other is not.

At two I looked at the fifth field.

The one receiving.

There are eight Latin characters and my name on an annexed sheet.

I received, so this field is full.

At twenty past two I looked at the sixth field.

The one handing over.

The name of the one before is there.

The field is one.

When I hand over there is no place for my name.

At twenty to three I looked for when the handing over is entered.

At the time of handover, it says.

Today is not that.

I did not enter it.

At three I counted the five fields again.

I have entered in two.

The third and the fourth.

The fourth is nought.

At ten past three I opened page sixty-four of the notebook.

The next is eight.

I counted again today.

Seven registered. Seven articles. Seven impressions. Five fields handed over.

One person present.

There is no eight.

At twenty past three I wrote the six standing fields.

The sixth is the number who read.

Five thousand seven hundred and forty-eight.

At twenty to four I opened the box.

Seven articles. Seven impressions. The three hundred and thirty-fifth day.

At ten to four I counted the chairs.

Two.

Personnel present is one.

The chairs and the people do not agree.

I entered it in the third field.

At four I opened the right-hand material.

Six hundred and seven pages. The date of the page that grew is the twenty-second of February, ninety-nine.

The third line of page five hundred and thirty-nine is blank.

The twenty-seventh day.

At twenty past four I set out the margin entries by month.

The one before runs from three in March to three in December.

The greatest month is four in April.

Mine is six in January.

At twenty to five I read again what the margin is for.

It is where a thing with no field is entered.

Things with no field are increasing.

At ten to five I wrote the thirty-ninth margin entry.

The fields handed over are five and the form's fields are six.

The sixth field is the one handing over, and it does not come across.

So the fields that come across in this room are always one fewer.

The one before enlarged the model from five to six.

What came across is five.

At five I drew off the query record.

The set's row was opened seventy-four times yesterday. The imprint route, forty-six.

At twenty past five I drew off the mornings only.

Not one day was missed over nine days.

The hour it was opened is twenty to nine on all nine.

The same to the minute.

What a person opens is not the same to the minute.
