The Yuki-onna appears on blizzard nights as a beautiful woman in white, freezing people to death with her icy breath. Told since the Muromachi period, she became widely known through Lafcadio Hearn’s 1904 collection Kwaidan.
Her core is the horror of an environment that seems to possess a will. The Yuki-onna is not a monster from outside but snow and cold given form — nature’s mercilessness wearing a human face.
