The Mandela Catalogue

만델라 카탈로그

The Mandela Catalogue is an analog horror franchise created by American YouTuber Alex Kister beginning in 2021. Set in the fictional Mandela County between the 1990s and the early 2010s, it follows otherworldly beings called “Alternates” that psychologically torment people to the point of suicide, then take over their identities like doppelgängers. Borrowing the grain of VHS tape and decayed broadcast footage, it stages horror that intrudes through familiar media.

Dense biblical allusion runs through the series, carrying the reading that the Alternates are in fact biblical demons and that the Archangel Gabriel is Satan in disguise. The core of the dread is not violence but the erosion of identity — the Other who erases you and sits wearing your face, its true nature never resolved. That sealed ambiguity rhymes with our world’s observational uncertainty.
