Level 1 lies just past Level 0, its endless concrete structure and dim fluorescent lighting suggesting a vast parking garage or warehouse. It is larger and darker than Level 0’s monotonous yellow rooms, and — most importantly — it is the first place where beings that pursue people appear.
A turning point of the horror lives on this level. As an active threat finally enters a Backrooms that until now held only the silence of absence, the unease of empty space itself shifts into the fear of being chased. It is the threshold level where liminal horror gives way to hunting horror.
