The Backrooms began with a single 2019 image of an empty, yellow-wallpapered office and grew through wikis and games into a collaboratively built modern lore. To "no-clip" out of reality is to fall into a monotonous, exitless space of humming fluorescent lights and damp carpet that stretches on without end.
Because the space itself, not a monster, is the source of dread, the Backrooms is a modern cousin of cosmic horror’s non-Euclidean geometry and unobservability — the claustrophobia of the familiar that offers no way out.
