Flying polyps arrived on Earth hundreds of millions of years ago and are only partially material, sometimes nearly invisible. They control powerful winds as a weapon, and by this means drove the Great Race of Yith underground.
The Great Race eventually sealed the polyps beneath the earth using advanced technology, but it is implied they will one day break free and annihilate the final civilizations of the planet.
