Cimmeria lies on the northern fringe of the Hyborian world — a harsh, sunless land of dark hills and perpetual overcast that Howard invoked as the forge of Conan's character. Its people are bred hard by the unforgiving terrain and climate.
The Cimmerians worship the god Crom but ask nothing of him; they believe he grants only courage and will at birth and is otherwise indifferent to mortal affairs. This austere theology mirrors Conan's self-reliant outlook throughout his adventures.
