Cheuksin

Also: Cheukshin

Cheuksin (廁神) is the outhouse goddess of Korean folk belief. She belongs to the cult of household deities, but her worship was minor compared with that of Jowangsin, the hearth goddess. She was imagined as a young virgin with hair some 150 centimeters long. Furious at being exiled to the outhouse by the supreme deity Cheonjiwang and by Jowangsin, she was said to pass her time there counting her hairs. Her story appears in the Jeju myth Munjeon Bonpuli.

She was considered the most dangerous of the household gods. Anyone who entered the outhouse without coughing three times would be attacked with her long hair, and whoever it touched would sicken and die; not even a shaman could appease her. She was said to despise children and topple them into the pit, and a child who fell in was expected to die before adulthood unless a rite was held to calm her. On the lunar days containing a six — the 6th, 16th and 26th — people avoided the outhouse altogether.

Unlike the other household deities, she had no gut ritual or origin chant of her own, because she was thought to be malevolent. Because of her feud with Jowangsin, it was taboo to carry anything from the outhouse into the kitchen, or from the kitchen into the outhouse.

Korean household-deity (gasin) belief; the Jeju myth Munjeon Bonpuli.
