The Thunderbird is a bird-like spirit in the history and culture of Indigenous North American peoples, regarded as a supernatural being of power and strength. It is said to create thunder by flapping its wings and lightning by flashing its eyes.
It is often viewed as a protector, sometimes intervening on people's behalf. Pacific coast peoples tell of the struggle between the Thunderbird and the Whale, and Menominee tradition has it battling great horned serpents. Its image appears prominently in Indigenous art, such as Kwakwaka'wakw totem poles.
