Jorogumo is a spider yokai that can shapeshift into a beautiful woman. The kanji 女郎蜘蛛 literally mean "woman-spider," and the creature lures its victims with a false human appearance before binding them in webs.
An alternate written form, 絡新婦, means "entangling newlywed woman." The duality of a predator lurking beneath a mask of allure is the heart of this yokai.
