The Cadejo is a supernatural dog spirit of Central American folklore, divided into a good white Cadejo and an evil black one. Both appear to travelers at night: the white Cadejo protects them from harm and danger on their journey, while the black Cadejo — sometimes an incarnation of the devil — tries to kill them.
Accounts vary by region; in Costa Rica and Panama the Cadejo is described as a single black creature rather than two opposing forms.
