The Door That Leads Out

The last day of October. A set went out of this room.

At ten past nine I opened the progress of the application.

It says it is under examination.

The term of examination falls in mid-December.

This room is entered as the side that examines. Unchanged for eleven days.

At twenty past nine I looked through the four requests to read.

The requesting party in all four is the holding library.

The path by which they came to know is entered.

Three by the imprint path and one by the compiler path.

At half past nine I opened the holding library's enquiry.

Four requests to read have come in.

It asks whether they must wait for the examination to close.

At twenty to ten I found the procedure.

It says material under examination may be issued first as a reading copy.

Issue as a reading copy is not an item of the examination.

The side that issues decides.

At ten I looked for who the side that issues is.

It is attached to the authority to search.

It is the authority that filled the compiler field of the four volumes in August.

At twenty past ten I opened the index of imprints again.

When I looked last year this index had only an item for going in.

It had no item for entering what had been struck out.

I opened the item for issue as a reading copy.

There is a field for sending out.

At twenty to eleven I read the procedure for the field for sending out.

It is a field for entering what goes out.

On the paper of this room it is the first field for entering what goes out.

At eleven I looked for how many copies are to be issued.

It is entered nowhere.

There is no field in this room for counting copies. As confirmed in May.

I took off one set.

At twenty past eleven I looked for the mark that divides the copy taken off from the original.

There is none.

The procedure of the third field has it that the diverging side is entered as the copy.

I set them side by side. They do not diverge.

Then there is no copy.

Both sets are the original.

At twenty to twelve I attached the imprint page.

Four are required. The author, the imprint, the place of issue and the date of issue.

Pnakotic Press comes out entered in the imprint field.

The date of issue is today.

The field for place of issue comes out blank.

At noon I looked at the author field.

Four of the five bundles are recovered material and have no name.

The fifth is entered.

I did not enter it.

At twenty past twelve I looked at the compiler field.

Eight letters come out entered in it.

On the detail screen there is a name. The one put in in August.

At one I entered it in the register of post as outgoing.

Three physical things have gone out of this room this year. This is the fourth.

Thirty-nine physical things have come in.

At twenty past one I stopped while filling the field for sending out.

There is no field for a date of return.

There is no field for entering that what has gone out comes back.

At twenty to two I sent it.

At ten to two I looked for whether issue as a reading copy counts as issue.

It is not entered.

Material under examination was put out, so it is not issue.

An imprint page was attached, so it is issue.

Both items stand in the procedure and there is no item that divides them.

At two I drew off the record of searches.

A path has been added.

It is the reading path.

There is no record of its opening.

At twenty to three I looked at what the reading path had opened.

It is the set's row.

It is not what was sent today.

It opened the side that is in this room, not the side that went out.

At three I opened the box.

Seven articles. Seven marks. Day six hundred and fourteen.

The sixth field is fourteen thousand and sixty-six. The set's row was opened a hundred and eighty-six times yesterday and the imprint path a hundred and twenty-seven. The compiler path, thirty-eight.

The right-hand material is eight hundred and eighty-six pages. The page added is dated 28 November 1999. The third line of page five hundred and thirty-nine has stood blank three hundred and six days. The original of the fifth bundle is a hundred and seventy-seven pages and has not grown for six hundred and eighty-four days.

At half past three I wrote down on paper every place that grows.

The page count of the log, the page count of the right-hand material, the search value, the sixth field and the day count of the marks.

Five.

The increments are the same as yesterday's.

At ten to four I opened the register of post.

The twelfth page has not come for a hundred and seventy-two days.

Head office has sent nothing for a hundred and fifty-one.

The reply with no address is still inside.

At five to four I opened page sixty-four of the notebook.

It says the next is eight.

Today again there is no count in this room that comes to eight.

At four the holding library's reply came.

It says the reading copy has been received.

A record of reading is attached.

It says one reading.

At ten past four I looked further at that record of reading.

There is no field for the party reading.

It is not entered whether the figure is cumulative or for the day.

There is no count in this room by which to divide them.

At twenty past four I looked for a field to enter that figure.

There is none in this room.

To see whether it grows, the holding library must send it.

At twenty to five I wrote back through the places that grow and how they have moved.

It moved from the film to the ledger.

It moved from the ledger to the serial.

It moved from the serial to the field.

All of it has been inside this room until now.

At five the reading path opened once.

That is twice today.

The side that opened it is not entered.
