The Index of Imprints

April 9. The index has no box for ceasing to trade.

At twenty past nine I opened the P entries.

Pnakotic Press is there.

The state of entry is current.

At twenty to ten I looked for the entry of its ceasing to trade.

The index has no box for it.

There are two states of entry.

Current and expunged.

At ten I looked for how a house that has ceased to trade is entered.

It is entered as expunged, it says.

Expunging is done on application.

The applicant is that imprint.

At twenty past ten I read it twice.

A house that is gone cannot apply.

Without an application there is no expunging.

Without expunging it is current.

That a house which has ceased to trade stays current is the structure.

At twenty to eleven I looked for a box to enter that in.

There is none.

I wrote it in the margin. It is seventy-three.

At eleven I traced back when this house was entered.

August last year.

An entry went into the imprint field on the cover of the combining and was reflected in the weekly update.

At twenty past eleven I looked at the account notation of that entry.

Eight Latin characters.

The first four are this room.

At twenty to twelve I copied the last four onto paper.

I set them against the last four of the notation that opens the row in the morning.

They are the same.

All four characters are the same.

At noon I looked for a box to enter that in.

There is none.

I wrote it in the margin. It is seventy-four.

Whether the same notation is one or two is not recorded.

The hand that revived it and the hand that opens it are the same notation.

Whether they are the same person that notation does not show.

At one I read the one before's log for that day.

There is no ground for entering in the imprint field, it says.

Leaving it blank is not caught, it says.

They filled it, it says.

There is a margin entry that day.

At twenty past one I read the log for the week after.

It came up current in the index, it says.

Whether the reviving was theirs or the field's does not divide, it says.

At half past one I looked again for what they entered it on.

The titles of the four bundles in the box are old books of that house.

That is not a ground, it says.

A name printed in a book is an entry that an imprint existed, not that it exists.

At twenty-five to two I looked at whether the index has that distinction.

It has none.

The index puts what existed and what exists in one box.

At twenty to two I looked for what the index confirms.

It confirms nothing.

It only enters.

At two I looked for the word current.

Its meaning is not entered.

Whether it means it exists or means it has not been expunged is not in the index.

I wrote it in the margin. It is seventy-five.

At twenty past two I drew off the queries by the imprint route.

Seventy-three yesterday.

The side that comes by that route came looking by the imprint's name.

Seventy-three a day come looking by a name that has ceased to trade.

At twenty to three I drew off the queries against the set's row.

A hundred and six yesterday.

In August last year it was eight.

At ten to three I looked at what the side coming by the imprint route opens.

The set's row.

Six sub-numbers are in the set.

One of them is my log.

They come in by a name that has ceased to trade and read this morning's entries of mine.

At three I opened the box.

Seven articles. Seven impressions. The four hundred and tenth day.

At twenty past three I looked at the sixth field.

Seven thousand nine hundred and forty.

At twenty to four I opened the right-hand material.

Six hundred and eighty-two pages. The date of the page that grew is the eighth of May, ninety-nine.

The third line of page five hundred and thirty-nine is blank.

The hundred and second day.

At four I opened the schedule.

The compiler field and the imprint field are one row.

For a month I have entered nothing in that field.

At twenty past four I opened the notebook.

That line on page sixty-four is as it was.

There is no count that comes to eight today either.

At ten to five I counted the imprints current in the index.

Twelve in the P section.

One of them was entered by this room.

Where the other eleven were entered is not in the index.

The index has no field for the side that entered.

I wrote it in the margin. It is seventy-six.

At five a request for a reply came from head office.

Confirmation of whereabouts is to be carried out for those materials in the index of imprints whose imprint's whereabouts are unknown, it says.

The period is two months.

At twenty past five I counted the subjects.

One.

Pnakotic Press.

The side confirming is this room.

The side that entered it is this room too.
