The horror of cosmic horror is usually never seen clearly. Instead of completing the image, the writer insists again and again that it cannot be rendered in human language, handing the gap to the reader’s imagination. The most frightening thing is not what is described but what refuses description to the end.
In the Pnakotic Press serials this technique recurs as erosion, redaction, and the unnameable mosaic. A number whose last digit is worn past reading, a name whose syllables scatter — these are modern forms of the unnameable.
