SCP-1762 (Where the Dragons Went)

SCP-1762 (드래곤이 사라진 곳)

Also: Where the Dragons Went · Jabberwocky Event

SCP-1762-1 is an ordinary cardboard box, 32 by 20 by 26 centimeters, spray-painted silver inside and out, with "HERE BE DRAGONS" written across the lid in black permanent marker. From time to time it emits black smoke and opens, releasing SCP-1762-2: small dragons that appear to be folded from Kami paper. Resembling both Eastern and Western dragons and measuring 9 to 30 centimeters, they emerged in groups of fifty to more than four hundred at a time, then returned to the box after a few hours.

Over roughly a year that the Foundation named the Jabberwocky Event, writing appeared on the lid — news from the world the dragons came from. They reported that their world, sustained by human belief, was collapsing, and at times they left hand-folded gifts behind. The communication ran only one way, so the Foundation could only watch. The messages grew more desperate until, at the end, they spoke of war and of farewell.

When the event was over, the words on the lid had changed to "HERE WERE DRAGONS," and the box showed no further anomalous properties, prompting its reclassification from Safe to Neutralized. It is widely regarded as one of the most moving entries on the SCP wiki: with no monster and no threat, it is the story of an entire world quietly recording its own extinction through a single cardboard box.
