Rule-based horror, grown in internet horror communities, presents a list of taboos — "do not open the door after 3 a.m." — and then accrues dread from the contradictions in the rules and the consequences of breaking them. What is dangerous, and why, is never finally explained.
Because it makes the reader infer the logic of the taboo, it is a participatory form with strong potential for interactive weird-fiction content.
