The lich, named from the Old English līċ ("corpse"), is a wizard who, pursuing immortality, has imprisoned his own soul in a phylactery. So long as the phylactery is not destroyed, he returns again and again.
The notion of hiding one’s death outside one’s body echoes the Slavic Koschei, and as a motif of preserving soul and record apart, it crosses with our world.
