Kingsport is a fictional coastal town in Lovecraft's New England setting, based on Marblehead, Massachusetts, a town bordering Salem. Its rocky cliffs were modeled on those of Marblehead and Rockport.
It first appeared in the 1920 short story "The Terrible Old Man" and also features in "The Festival" (written 1923, published 1925) and "The Strange High House in the Mist" (1926). Lovecraft created Kingsport before visiting Marblehead in 1922, a visit he later recalled as "the most powerful single emotional climax during my nearly forty years of existence."
Kingsport functions as a key location within Lovecraft's shared New England geography, alongside Arkham, Dunwich, and Innsmouth.
