Hazel Heald

Hazel Heald (1896–1961) was a pulp fiction writer from Somerville, Massachusetts, known for her collaborations with H. P. Lovecraft: “The Man of Stone” (1932), “The Horror in the Burying-Ground” (1933), “The Horror in the Museum” (1933), “Winged Death” (1934) and “Out of the Aeons” (1935).

The stories went out under Heald’s name, but a record survives of how much Lovecraft put into them. Of “Winged Death,” an over-the-top comic-horror piece, he wrote to August Derleth that his share was “something like 90 to 95%.” The name on the story and the hand that wrote it do not match — the first thing to know about these collaborations.
