Averoigne is a fictional French province invented by Clark Ashton Smith, loosely modelled on the historical Auvergne. It is a medieval landscape of monasteries coexisting uneasily with cursed forests and ruins inhabited by vampires, werewolves, and sorcerers of antique evil.
The cycle leans toward Gothic horror and dark fantasy rather than outright cosmic horror, yet it is unified by Smith's decadent prose and his sense of humanity's smallness before ancient powers.
