Ulthar

울타르

Ulthar is a town in H. P. Lovecraft's "The Cats of Ulthar," famous for its law forbidding the killing of cats. The tale was first published in the literary journal Tryout in November 1920.

An orphan named Menes loses his kitten to an old couple who kill cats, then offers a prayer that affects the clouds and grants all the cats of Ulthar sentience. After the cats take their vengeance, the townspeople establish the protective law. The character Atal reappears in Lovecraft's later works, continuing Ulthar's significance.
