The SCP Foundation is a collaborative wiki begun on 4chan’s /x/ board in 2007, built on the shared premise of a fictional secret agency that collects, contains, and documents anomalous objects (SCPs). Every entry is written in a cold report style, and at its core sits the object-class system: Safe items can be stably contained, Euclid items behave unpredictably, and Keter items are extremely difficult to contain.
The system’s appeal lies in translating horror into classification and paperwork. Containment procedures stand in for screaming, and redacted boxes stand in for description. This archive tone — in which the report form itself becomes an instrument of horror — overlaps precisely with the sensibility of our own mythos, where the record is the seal.
