Lightning Bird

The lightning bird, or impundulu, is a creature of the Zulu people of South Africa; the name itself means “lightning bird.” It takes the form of a black bird the size of a person, said to summon thunder and lightning with its wings and talons. Bound up with witchcraft, it serves as the familiar of a witch or witch doctor, striking its master’s enemies and carrying an insatiable thirst for blood.

The lightning bird is thought to be immortal because it outlives its masters. It cannot be harmed by gunshot or blade, cannot be poisoned or drowned, and can be undone only by fire. That image — a familiar passing between masters across generations, doing unseen bidding — shares a register with our world’s blood-debt that never subsides.
