The Adze is a vampiric being in the folklore of the Ewe people of Togo and Ghana. In its natural state it takes the form of a firefly, and it transforms into human shape upon capture.
In firefly form the Adze travels through keyholes, cracks in walls, or under closed doors at night, sucking the blood of people as they sleep and making them fall sick and die. Tales of the creature and its effects were probably an attempt to describe the deadly effects of mosquitoes and malaria.
