Dokkaebi-bul

도깨비불

Also: Goblin Fire · Will-o’-the-wisp

Dokkaebi-bul is a bluish light that drifts over fields and graves, sometimes explained as burning phosphorus. It was said to appear on night roads to bewitch people or lead them astray.

It was also read as a sign of the year’s harvest, with the fire’s shape and direction divined for fortune in farming. The very sight of an unidentifiable light rising over the fields is a Korean night-vision spectacle that turns the everyday dark into unfamiliar territory.

Korean tradition (Dokkaebi-bul).
